So I have been chugging along on my painted army project. I have experimented with all manner of allies in the pursuit of only using painted models. With the release of Codex Eldar, and a few games with the new book under my belt I am even more motivated to get some models painted. My current project is the Wraith Knight. After an evening of assembly I have quite a bit of the structure of the model put together.

For every painted army you see there are several more that are mostly gray. I am guilty of this I frequently suffer from gamer a.d.d. and will switch projects before I finish an army. However GW has given us a great boon in 6th ed 40k and that is the allies system.

My plan is to only field painted units. If I want a new unit, I will break out the paints. Being able to ally means that armies that are mostly unpainted can still be played as an ally for another force. For example I just purchased a Riptide that I want to play. I already have painted fire warriors, and I can do a simple quick conversion to make a fireblade. Now I have an ally force I can throw into my eldar as soon as I paint the Riptide. I can slowly build up my painted tau without the worry of not being able to play with any tau until I complete the whole army. Every time I paint a new unit I can work into my eldar army until I have enough units to switch from and Eldar/Tau army to a Tau/Eldar army and eventually to a pure Tau one.

Now my hope is that eventually allies will become an official rule for warhammer fantasy.Neiltj1http://www.blogger.com/profile/10244394572880166230noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2349418166646127210.post-1161685389515773202013-03-19T20:09:00.001-07:002013-03-19T20:11:58.901-07:00Fun with Pink Horrors aka "The Jack in the Box"

So at my job I have plenty of time to think about 40k and the stuff I want to try. During a conversation with a friend of mine we started to brainstorm on the new Tzeentch daemon rules. He is a fan of Tzeentch and was hoping to find a way to make them good.

So we started with a Herald with all the trappings mastery level 3, +1 str to powers. The herald will take the primaris for Tzeentch and Divination. You then stick him in a 19 strong pink horror unit with the blasted standard and the Tzeentch primaris power. We found that the unit was kind of squishy with on T3 and a meager save. The solution is to stick the unit in a bastion. With brotherhood of sorcerers rule only one model needs to cast the power. So even with only one firepoint per side two models can fire out. So the Herald casts prescience to give the whole squad rerolls, then during the shooting phase the unit fires 3d6 times and the Herald fires 2d6 times all at str 6. Finally once per game you can tack on 2d6 str 4 hits from the standard.

To really make the most of the tactic put the bastion a little ways outside of your deployment zone toward the middle of the table. Then move into the bastion turn 1. This really allows you put a lot of fire into anything in the central part of the table. You can also make sure an objective is right behind the bastion for a last turn objective grab.

The bastion and the unit is susceptible to CC but hopefully all the CC that daemons pack in can hold off any threats. Another nice benefit is that you get to allocate wounds from glances/pens so you don't have to worry about a luck hit taking out the Herald. Not a lot of armies can deal with AV 14 at range, especially AV 14 without hull points.

I still have yet to try this out on the table, so I would love to hear from anyone who gives it a try.

Well almost done with the Monolith. I just need to finish the guns and add the last of the glow-rods. At some point I think I need to rebuild a light box, because the flash is really drowning out a lot of the effect on the stone. Now I need to finish my second annihilation barge, and I should be set for an upcoming tourney.Neiltj1http://www.blogger.com/profile/10244394572880166230noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2349418166646127210.post-31939032355150438702012-09-06T20:04:00.000-07:002012-09-06T20:04:08.442-07:00Chaos Hellbrute

I picked up a starter box for 40k and I fell in love with the new chaos models. I absolutely had to paint a hellbrute asap. I have not even finished assembling the rest of the box. When it comes to painting I have been very a.d.d. lately, working on necrons, marines and now chaos. I found the hellbrute really easy to put together while still having a lot of detail. GW's plastic models have only improved. I look forward to seeing what some of the new chaos kits look like.
Yes in this last pic that is some shine on his armor. I am matching my old word bearers paint job and the old gw wash left the armor glossy. So a layer of 'ardcoat and the shine is replicated. In person the transition from yellow to bone is a little smoother than the pics would make you believe. I cant wait to try out this model on the table, of course I would rather do that with a new book. Fortunately I have plenty of stuff to paint to keep me occupied until it come out.Neiltj1http://www.blogger.com/profile/10244394572880166230noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2349418166646127210.post-89941186440616114892012-07-22T16:23:00.001-07:002012-07-22T16:23:46.766-07:00Night Scythe

So in light of the new flier rules I felt it might be nice to pick up one for my necrons. I stayed up painting it last night and other than a few details/bits it is finished. This model is really cool, and I cant wait to get it on the table. And to those who might be curious it is easy to magnetize so you can switch between the two fliers.Neiltj1http://www.blogger.com/profile/10244394572880166230noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2349418166646127210.post-29684633271344526832012-06-26T20:25:00.001-07:002012-06-26T20:25:57.208-07:006th ed. So just a few more days until we mere mortals have our own copies of the new 40k rules. I have no clue what armies I am interested in working on. So I am keeping myself occupied with what has to be the biggest pain in the butt I have ever worked on. The Necron Ghost Ark. With the paint scheme I am using I have to paint it as I assemble it and that really slows the whole thing down. I figure that when I get totally sick of It I will go back to working on Minotaurs.Neiltj1http://www.blogger.com/profile/10244394572880166230noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2349418166646127210.post-33269898628406157812012-04-04T20:02:00.000-07:002012-04-04T20:02:41.069-07:00Myrmidon Champion

It now seems that I will have time to keep up with this blog. So I have a new project. One that I have been working on in the concept stage for awhile. They are the Minotaurs chapter of space marines.

So I love odd theme lists and I decided that I wanted to be able to use my army to counts as for any marine codex. So in my search for a suitable color scheme a friend of mine let me borrow the Badab wars book from forgeworld. I fell in love with fluff for the Minotaurs and quickly set about figuring out how I wanted to paint them. With my scheme worked out I needed my first list. I decided to play a Loganwing style army all on foot. I like armies that are uncommon and I felt that a foot list fit the bill.

I really like the feel of this list. The lonewolves, thunderwolves, and Logan really make for a band of heroes.Neiltj1http://www.blogger.com/profile/10244394572880166230noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2349418166646127210.post-60101683288984379702011-11-14T16:28:00.000-08:002011-11-14T16:29:53.938-08:00Behold the power of Tesla

So I have played 3 games so far with the new Necrons, and I absolutely love the tesla rule. If you have not been following the necrons, weapons with the tesla rule get 2 additional hits anytime they roll a 6 on the to-hit roll. The weapon of choice being the Tesla Destructor 4 str 7 shots twinlinked. This thing is awesome. The platform of choice for fielding it is the Annihlation Barge. At 90pts I think that it will be a staple of many necron armies.

The annihilation barge is a great all rounder. It can threaten infantry, as well as light vehicles. It is AP- so you will have a -1 to your vehicle damage rolls, but I think the number of hits can help to offset this. I think the best part of the tesla weapons is that they are not just the same old thing. The rule is a new concept to help express the technological superiority of the Necrons. I really like the idea of blasting my opponents with lightning. What follows is a list I put together to play with the concept of maximizing the tesla destructor in the army list.

overlord warscythe
command barge
overlord warscythe
harbinger of destruction w/solarpulse
5 warriors w/night scythe
10 scarabs
9 scarabs
x2 annihilation barges
monolith
1995

In a perfect world your overlords and scarabs deal with any really heavy vehicles. Your tesla deal with light vehicles and infantry. The monolith is there so that you can bring any troops ,that may have their transports killed, through its doorway. Its pieplate isn't terrible either. the two solarpulses are there to help keep your very fragile fliers alive a little longer. The three eldritch lances are not really there for aggressive use they are more of a backup. 5 man warrior squads will die quick, but I think that this list might do well in kill point missions. In objective missions warriors will have to get out of their transports to capture since killing their ride sends them to reserve.Neiltj1http://www.blogger.com/profile/10244394572880166230noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2349418166646127210.post-83911579312711103032011-11-08T18:29:00.000-08:002011-11-08T18:29:04.208-08:00Awakening of Fringeworld Hutnesut

The weight of ages hung silent around Anrakyr as he gazed with unblinking eyes at the hololith before him. The Necrons of this world were slowly reclaiming their world from the human trespassers. There was one foe that could destroy all their work. Anrakyr gazed at the icons representing an armored column belonging to the barbaric humans known as Space Wolves. They were currently on a vector to strike deep into the necron lines. "Prepare my legions for transport" commanded Anrakyr in his sepulchral voice.

So this was my first game with the new Necron dex and I must admit I was very impressed with the firepower they can put out. I built my force at 1500 as my local store has been running most of the tournaments at this level.
My opponent is Rick of Hamster Cage Studios he has brought some puppies for my necrons to flay. He is as excited to play against the new necrons as I am to try them out. This will definitely be an enjoyable game.

Anrakyr
3 harbingers of destruction one with solar pulse
So the game was to be kill points with spearhead deployment. I elect to go first and I deploy in a corner with the buildings. Mainly to make it difficult for his vehicles to get cover.
I have had the initiative stolen 3 times out of the last 4 games that I got the roll to go first. So needless to say I wasn't entirely surprised :P

Turn one

Wolves
One of my crypteks slams his staff in the ground firing off his solar pulse putting night fight into effect for the wolves first turn. One of Rick's rhinos darts forward trying to impede my los. The vindicator drives forward and shoots the monolith but fails to do any lasting damage. The long fangs peer against the blinding light and are able to make out the spectral forms of the wraiths. A whithering barrage drops 2 of the wraiths and an immortal.

Necrons
My entire army lurches forward. The Monoliths shot lands square onto the hunters, two flux arcs also manage two score a couple of wounds. And they ALL saved. Both annihilation barges shoot at the wolves and account for a single wound. Ricks armor save dice are on fire. At this point I am a little worried about his long fangs and I was unable to hit his vindicator with any ether lances or the tachyon arrow. I run the wraiths over to keep my immortals in cover behind them. The scarabs fleet forward and then assault the rhino crumbling it into a rusting hulk. My first turn is really bad with only two models killed, but the fortunes of the necrons would soon shift.

Turn two
The vindicator's armor is reduced by 5 allowing scarabs to glance it on 2s. It explodes lighting up the evening sky.

Turn 3

Wolves
In a surprising move the wolves pull back from the main battleline. In awe of their supreme ability to nom-nom almost all of Rick's army fires into the scarabs and the wraith reducing them to piles of scrap. The razorback and the AT portion of the longfangs shoot the monolith shaking the crew, but living metal saves the day.

Necrons

The Monolith pulls Arakyr's unit through its portal then the monolith moves up and to the right. For the third turn in a row the monolith decides that it is adverse to the taking of life.(nearby cryptek immediately begins rewriting faulty code). The harbinger of Transmogrification uses his tremorstaff to slow Njal's unit down his accompaniment of immortals are unable to penetrate the armor of the greyhunters. The rest of the Necrons fire at the greyhunters on the left flank killing 5. One lone cryptek levels his eldritch lance at the rune priest that had just left the safety of the longfang unit, reducing him to a smoking pair of armored boots.

Turn 4

Wolves
Rick's army singles out Anrakyr and his Immortals. The 4 Immortals and Harbinger are killed Anrakyr is reduced to 1 wound.

Necrons
The squad on the left is reduced to the Librarian. Njals unit is finally hit by the monolith and suffers 4 casualties.

Turn 5

Wolves
Njal and the remnants of his unit charge forward in a last ditch effort, 3 necron warriors are put down by the furious bolter fire by the greyhunters and support from the longfangs. The 2 AT longfangs continue to hammer at the monolith I believe that I yet again make a living metal save to keep the monolith firing.

Necrons
The monolith moves forward and sucks one greyhunter through its portal, the particle whip strikes out at the longfangs. The rest of the Necrons whittle down the greyhunter unit until Njal stands alone. Njal roars his defiance as the necrons charge the lone space wolf. Njal swings at the unit killing a warrior and Anrakyr manages to slip a wound onto Njal killing him.

At this point Rick decides to call the game since all he has remaining is a razorback and some longfangs.

Postgame
I was really happy with the way the Necrons performed. The amount of fire power they can put out is nice. The monolith really earned its points in the late game as it continued to draw fire and hurt stuff with its particle whip. However my MVP is going to have to be the annihilation barges as they just consistently made Rick take lots of saves. In hindsight Rick mentioned that he should have played aggressive since it let me engage him in a duel of firepower which favored my army. I also felt that not deploying in his vehicles allowed my anti infantry guns to get into the game from the first shot.

It was a fun game and I look forward to trying my list against Rick's blood angels this coming Friday.Neiltj1http://www.blogger.com/profile/10244394572880166230noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2349418166646127210.post-87740713812545276602011-10-31T20:26:00.000-07:002011-10-31T20:32:36.060-07:00Eldar Vs.Tau in a duel to the death.

Eldrad stood upon the ridge overlooking the Imperial settlement. So my friend Robert told me that he was getting back into 40k. After a chat we decided that with some of my models he could field a force and we should get in a game. I win the roll to go first and since my army is straight forward I take it. I deploy using a stack of shipping containers for cover, and the Rangers defending my objective.

the Tau deployed the suits with missiles and fusion on the left, and the twinlinked missiles in the center. One unit of broadsides control the building(where his objective is) and the other is on the left.

Turn one

I move around the left side of the containers with my heavy hitters. I end up dropping two of the suits in the crisis squad on the left. My guardians and avengers manage to drop two kroot. My jetbikes turbo boost along my right flank in hopes of putting pressure on his objective late game.

His turn his dice went hot with him killing a bunch of models. His first shot explodes a warwalker and killing 4 other eldar along with it. The railhead fires a submunition round at the rangers killing two. His crisis suits just pour fire into my two remaining walkers wrecking one immobilizing the other causing it to wreck as well. by the time his shooting was over I had lost all this.

While that may not seem like alot it represent a huge chunk of firepower. And considering that my whole army was behind cover it was a bit demoralizing. Fortunately though all models except the rangers were fearless due to the Avatar.

Turn Two

After the fire I took the turn before my heavies circle back to the right keeping the containers between them and one unit of broadsides and the left crisis unit. The harlies dart out hoping to use the rock formation and their veil of tears for protection. Both wraithlords fire at the left devilfish just manging to stun it. My unit of jetbikes is behind the building on the upper right. The avengers and guardians both fire at the kroot again killing three more. They then fail their morale and run off the table.
On Roberts turn his crisis unit on the right see past the veil of tears and are able to pop 3 harlequin. His mobile devilfish moves around the building to fire at my jetbikes, but due to their evasive manuevers he fails to kill any. With nothing better to shoot at the broadsides and crisis on the left target and kill another ranger even going to ground with a 2+. At this point the rangers are down to two models. His other broadsides target the Avatar and fail to hit. His railhead fires a submunition round and kill a few more guardians.

Turn 3

At this point my firepower starts to take its toll. I manage to kill a suit and put a wound on another in his right crisis squad. My jetbikes turbo again to the back corner of the objective building. My Wraithlord and Avatar break cover and lay down fire. The harlies bound over the rock formation and slam into the fish that had been stunned the previous turn. A bunch of dice are thrown resulting in several 6s turning the once proud tau warmachine into a towering fireball. One harlequin is caught in the blast while 3 firewarriors perish in the inferno. The pass their pin check but fail their break test and flee.

On Roberts turn 3 his fire warriors continue to run since the harlies are to close to allow them a chance to rally. His suits jump back away from the angry clowns firing into them dropping two. The Remaining devilfish swung down to shoot up my avengers, but I had them fortuned all game so they only lost one of their number. The broadsides opened fire and and wound twice, two rerollable 4++ later the avatar suffers two unsaved wounds. The crisis squad on the left advance toward my rangers firing into them. I fail another 2+ cover save putting me down to one ranger who promptly runs. I must now take Roberts objective not contest it as I reall dont have anything in position to move back and kill the crisis squad moving to block movement in that direction.

Turn 4

The rest of the game begins to proceed quickly as I dont have much choice but to throw my entire army at the objective. I move my bikes along the building to shoot and kill 2 firewarriors preventing them from having any chance to rally. The harlies charge the broadsides killing a drone and losing one of the number in return stalemating the combat.
First Eldrad attempts to eldritch storm the fish to spin its back armor to face the guardians on the off chance that the Avatar whiffs. The arrow points the fish directly at the Avatar. The Avatar promptly stuns the Fish and then fails to destroy it when he charges it. During Roberts turn his other broadsides unit puts a wound on a wraithlord and his unit of crisis are unable to wound the wraithlords T8. During the close combat phase the broadside tied up with the harlies manage to kill one while the clowns whiff followed by an eleven on the morale check. The shadowseer now all by his self runs back toward the Avatar that has just killed the last Devilfish killing two warriors in the explosion.

Turn 5

My jetbikes take the plunge and jump into the building close enough to control the objuective should the broadsides die. A wraithlord and the avenger all move up to the building to pour shots into the "Doomed" broadsides. (like what I did there?) My shooting goes well and the ruin is empty of tau except for a few scraps of smoking yellow armor.
Roberts turn he moves his hammerhead up to contest the objective taking some shots that put more wounds onto a wraithlord. Two suits move up in front of the hammerhead in hopes of blocking a charge or at worst forcing the wraithlord in charge range to shoot the suits ruining its charge against the vehicle. Robert rolls to see if the game ends but it does not. (allowing me a chance to win)

Turn 6

I jump my bikes behind the railhead and move a wraith lord right up to the hammerhead. The back wraithlord kills both suits in the way, and the other wraithlord and the jetbikes fail to damage the railhead. the wraith lord charges in and hits twice, auto pen, and then I roll a 5 for the damage result. Here is Robert showing the status of his vehicle.

Post game
This game was REALLY close. Two rolls had to go my way to get a win. I needed a turn 6 and then I needed to pop that railhead. The Tau codex may be old but its firepower is withering to a foot list. Robert is busy getting his own models together, but if you get a chance to play him you should he is a great opponent and a really nice guy.

Well folks this is my first ever battle report so I hope you liked it and I would love to hear feedback on how to make it better.
I was playing at my lgs one day and I noticed a distinct lack of los blocking terrain. These hills are pretty tall a single level blocks los to a rhino with a two level hill blocking land raiders and russes. They are pretty easy to make, and I think they look decent.
You really only need to read the first page since they have been keeping it updated as new info drops.

Now I have always liked the Necrons even back when destroyers were warriors riding lawn chairs. However the new models, fluff, and rules really just pull me back into this army. So after a year of playing dark eldar I am going to be switching to a new codex. Under the old book I can field about 1850, but with many models becoming significantly cheaper I will have to pick up some new toys. I don't have alot of cash to spend on this project so I will look at the 'dex before I decide on what I will purchase.

One thing I have loved about playing my dark eldar is that I always get compliments on the scheme. I am not the best painter by a long shot, but the scheme is similar to the one that gw puts on all the DE boxes. It is really striking so I like it. Currently my Necrons are boring as in gunmetal with black weapons. So I was wanting to do the new Necrons up in a striking scheme like my DE and I found a great inspiriational picture.
My other idea is a dark blue scheme with the accents in a dark bronze. I have some other projects that need to get worked on, but as soon as I get some test models done I will post them up.Neiltj1http://www.blogger.com/profile/10244394572880166230noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2349418166646127210.post-76620031318801703972011-10-25T20:47:00.000-07:002011-10-25T20:47:14.857-07:00

They are coming..... and it will be GloriousNeiltj1http://www.blogger.com/profile/10244394572880166230noreply@blogger.com0
